How English Was BornIn 55 B.C. Julius Caesar invaded Britain Because the British Celts were helping Gaul.
43 A.D. Emperor Claudius invades Britain Bringing their culture and languages (Latin, Greek, and Christianity). During this time the Romans are constantly under attack from the North and the east. (The picts) and (The Scots) 410 A.D. - 449 Romans are forced to leave Britain to defend Rome who is being attacked by the Visigoths of Gaul. Vortigern, ruler of the Britons, asks for help from the Saxons to defend themselves from the Picts and the Scots. As the Saxons arrive to help the Britons they bring with them a language called Low German. 449- Roman Empire falls 410-600 Britain is no longer occupied leaving them free for invasions by the the peoples from the coastline of the Northern Sea, from Denmark down to the mouth of Rhine. The natives of Britain who at this time are speaking (Scotts, Gaelic, & Welsh) are forced west almost completely off the island. The northern and eastern parts of the island "Angle- Land" are settled by the Jutes from Britany & France, and Saxony were settled by Germanic Angles and Saxons. The mixture of all these new languages formulates what we call Anglo Saxon English or Old English. 780-800 The Danish Vikings Raid England's northeast coast pushing the Saxons west for a time. As a Result, Danish is added to Old English. Around 900 A.D. Beowulf was said to be written around this time (it was written in Old English) 1066 William the Conquerer invades Britain from northern France. The language Northern French is added to the Danish/Old English mix forming what we call Middle English. |
Anglo Saxon Folk Epic Poem--An epic is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation.
My poem Dumbledore the Brave is a good example of this type of poetry because it tells the story of a brave wizard that inspires the people to defeat their common enemy The Giants. My theme of loyalty and heroic triumph that pop up during the course of the poem confirm the fact that this is an epic poem. |
